How these phases are calculated
SunCalc 1.9 estimates the Moon's phase and illuminated fraction. We scan its phase hourly, then bisect each principal-phase crossing to a one-minute interval. Lunar age is the phase fraction multiplied by the average synodic month of 29.530588 days; it is not an exact elapsed time since new moon.

Frequently asked questions
Are Moon phases the same everywhere?
The phase occurs at the same instant worldwide. The local time and sometimes the calendar date differ by time zone, while the Moon's orientation in the sky depends on your location.
What does the illumination percentage mean?
It estimates the fraction of the Moon's visible disc lit by the Sun. It approaches zero at new moon and 100% at full moon; clouds and the Moon's height above the horizon are not included.
Why is the lunar age approximate?
The Moon does not move at a constant speed. Multiplying its phase fraction by the average 29.530588-day cycle gives an approximate age, rather than the exact number of days since the last new moon.
How accurate are the new and full moon times?
The times follow the simplified SunCalc 1.9 model and may differ from published astronomical times by several hours. The one-minute search resolution only refines this model; use an astronomical almanac when precise timing matters.
