Time duration calculator
Find the exact time between two dates and times, even in different time zones. Shows days, hours, minutes and seconds and flags daylight saving changes.
Examples
| Worked example | From | To | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| A working day in UTC | 2026-10-21 09:00 UTC | 2026-10-21 17:30 UTC | 8:30:00 |
| New York, the night clocks spring forward | 2026-03-07 22:00 America/New_York | 2026-03-08 06:00 America/New_York | 7:00:00 A daylight saving change in America/New_York is inside this span (UTC−5 → UTC−4). |
| Tokyo to London on the same date | 2026-10-21 11:00 Asia/Tokyo | 2026-10-21 15:30 Europe/London | 12:30:00 |
How it is calculated
Each point is converted from its local date and time to an exact instant in UTC using that zone's rules for that date, then the earlier instant is subtracted from the later one. That is why a day in which clocks spring forward lasts 23 hours. A local time skipped by a daylight saving jump is moved forward to the first valid time.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the time between two times on different days?
Enter both dates as well as the times. The calculator subtracts the exact instants, so 22:00 on Monday to 06:30 on Tuesday is 8 hours 30 minutes.
Does the calculator handle daylight saving time?
Yes. Each point uses the UTC offset that applies in its own time zone on that date. If the span includes a change, a note shows the offset before and after.
Can the start and end be in different time zones?
Yes. Pick a zone for each point, for example a flight leaving Tokyo and landing in London. The result is the real elapsed time, not the difference between the two clock readings.
How do I get the total in hours or minutes only?
The result also lists total hours, total minutes and total seconds, so 1 day 2 hours is shown as 26 hours or 1,560 minutes.
