How the calculation works

A Gregorian year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years must also be divisible by 400. Thus 1900 is not a leap year, while 2000 and 2024 are. Leap years have 366 days, including February 29. The table shows the century containing the selected year, such as 2001–2100.

Frequently asked questions

Why was 1900 not a leap year but 2000 was?

Both are divisible by 100, but only 2000 is divisible by 400. The Gregorian century exception therefore excludes 1900 and includes 2000.

Is every fourth year a leap year?

Usually, but not always. Years divisible by 100 are skipped unless divisible by 400. There are 97 leap years in each 400-year Gregorian cycle.

Should I enter a Gregorian or Buddhist Era year?

Enter the Gregorian year, also called CE or AD. For example, use 2024 for Thai Buddhist Era 2567. The rule here concerns February 29, not leap months in lunar calendars.

Do the previous and next leap years include the selected year?

No. They are strictly earlier and later. For 2024, the previous leap year is 2020 and the next is 2028. Near a skipped century, the gap can be eight years, as from 2096 to 2104.
